From Left, Erwin Chemerinsky, Madeline Swinden, and James Irvine Swinden. The Joan Irvine Smith and Athalie R. Clarke Foundation made a $1 million gift in January 2007 to support establishing the law school, the school's first leadership gift. James Irvine Swinden's grandmother, Athalie R. Clarke, and mother, Joan Irvine Smith, were longtime advocates for establishing a law school at UCI. The family have been major supporters of the law school since the beginning of UCI.
